Help! I Need Something to Read!

Often our patrons ask library staff members for recommendations on “good books to read.” While we do not claim to have read every book in our collection, our staff members are available to give you some good ideas on great books. The following list of brochures has been published by the library for the benefit of “mystery lovers. Each of these brochures describes a “type of mystery” and lists a group of authors and/or their series’ stars. Please click on each brochure title for a larger view of the brochure.

Click here to access the opening page of Novelist

Novelist enables you to search for books in many different ways. The following steps list two search examples.

1. Find other books by a particular author.
Type the authors name in the “Quick Search” box on the top left side of the page. Make sure the box underneath the “Quick Search” box says “Author.” Click on the “Go” button underneath your search bar. A list of the author’s books, along with publication dates and the reading level of the book (adult, children’s etc.) should appear. For other types of searches, you may also choose Title, Series or Key Word instead of Author.

2. Find books similar to one of your favorites.
Type the title of your favorite book (or your favorite author’s name) in the “Quick Search” box on the top left side of the page. Make sure the box underneath the “Quick Search” box says “Title.” Click on the “Go” button underneath your search bar. A list of the author’s books, along with publication dates and the reading level of the book (adult, children’s etc.) should appear. Choose your favorite title from the list, by clicking on the blue highlighted title. A summary of the book, including a list of subject headings, should appear. Click on the “Find Similar Books” button at the top of the page. A list of “checked” subject headings should appear. Leave the check marks by the subjects that you liked in your favorite book, and delete the ones from the subjects that did not interest you. You may also limit your search according to Reading Level or page limit. After choosing your subjects, click on the “Search” button in the middle of the page. A list of books similar to your favorite one should appear.
If you need more help, please click on the “Learning Center” link located under the “Novelist Training” section on the top left corner of the page. Different levels of guides are available that can help you begin searching in minutes.
